The taste of blood in my mouth and the smell of sweat in my nose disabled my senses. But still something beautiful pulled me forward, like a rose in the dark.' But as you slowly understand who you are, the need of saving yourself is decreasing.
Find out what happened to yourself that day. That day more than hundred years ago.

The Princess of the Stone Clan is about to learn more about her people in her weeks on the road than she has learned in twenty-four years. And she’s about to discover something important about herself as well. The story kept me reading and there was good action and romance! The premise was great and I would recommend this book if you're looking for a good inspirational story about royalty helping their people, love, and broken trusts. However, there were a few important parts in this story that were glossed over.
The dark spirits had the potential to be a serious problem heaped on their other problems, but they weren't impressive because they didn't hinder the story at all. Keeping the dark spirits at bay was the whole point of Rheeya finding her Prince was to keep them at bay and it's like there was no urgency to it after all.All in all, it was a great story and if the important parts like the dark spirits, the abrupt romance, and the world-building were fleshed out more it could be so much better.

Following the story of Princess Rheeya of Stone clan, the author unveils part of a highly imaginative and complex world where politics and tradition often cause problems. Exploring this facet gives us a great look into the mythology of the world being created for the reader rather well. The book really picks up its' pace though when there is trouble at a mine, and the Princess is determined to personally go to the aid of the miners. In the process, loyalties are tested, larger threats are revealed, and traditions are challenged. It's a powerful story and well worth reading for the intense situation at the mine, but even moreso to read as a young princess fully comes into her own and shows her strength and willingness to look out for the best interests of everyone she's responsible for. She's a fantastically realized character and hopefully we at least get to see her a bit in the other books in the series. Princess Rheeya is the 11th incarnation of the Stone Clan Princess, who sees her sheltered position as that of a gilded cage and hates being paraded about and being told what she must and musn't do in order to keep the peace. When a mine collapses and her people are trapped, she leaps at the excuse to avoid her boring duties in the castle and to have a chance to go out and meet her prince.Unlike other 'I must find my soulmate stories' this is kind of important; if she is killed before her soul is complete (IE - Formal marriage) there is no rebirth.
If her soul gets contaminated by a Dark Spirit: Game Over, better rethink your pact. The story moves ahead in mostly dialogue, and while I had no problem with this in general, I found the action sequences rushed and there was definitely room for more elaboration. For instance, early in the novel Rheeya is heavily encouraged to wear a cloth-of-silver dress when meeting her suitors, mostly due to its insane cost. She hates it due to it being heavy and making her feel like a statue, but towards the last act we find out it's rather low cut and she felt uncomfortable showing off that much cleavage.
We also get to see a wedding ceremony, but the narration is busy telling us how bored everyone is, rather than much detail about the ceremony itself. This would be fine, if Rheeya's very presence wasn't a constant reminder that the deities are real and care. There was more focus on Rheeya's wanting to help and I thought while she was painted to be as admirable, but I found that she came into her own when she commanded the manpower. I mean, one determined lady with a shovel is a force, but give a hearty pep talk and get the people on your side, sort of deal.I will say that the diamond in the rough character was Rheeya's handmaiden, Marissa. She came across as one of those stuffy housekeepers who will give you your tea whether you like it or not. Everyone else pretty much was 'Yes Princess!'
To one degree or another, Marissa was busy running the show. 'Yes, Princess - now get your royal behind out of the rain before you die of pneumonia.' Anyway, I thought that while there were fantasy elements in the story, they were the sort that entry-level readers into the genre won't feel intimidated. Biological neural networks and mechanical neural networks.
There was the constant threat of Dark Spirits and while the characters spoke of The Pact and the innate dangers, in particular if anything happens to a Princess before she's found her OTL, the story was more character driven, and I suspect we'll see more of the high fantasy elements in later volumes.
